Kuro Obi: Black Belt Movie
Posted On 01/06/2009 03:38:45 by aikitehonbu

I recently purchased this move and have to give it full thumbs up. This is the first authentic Karate based movie to come out of Japan since the old "Street Fighter" movie days and features some of the best from the Japanese Karate Association. It had a great plot, excellent cinematography and really good fight sequences but the final fight scene was a little different. There is a moral to this movie that all Karate people will love and it is very valuable as a teaching tool for your students... Read More

Sparring from day one?
Posted On 11/09/2008 21:10:06 by dandjurdjevic

Free sparring in karate is a fairly modern innovation, developed post World War II as part of the drive to popularise karate and turn it into a sport. From there sport-based "distance" sparring ("shiai kumite" or "ippon shobu") spread rapidly throughout the karate world. However as I have discussed previously this type of sparring bears little resemblance to actual fighting and, very importantly, bears little resemblance to how karate was designed to be used. Karate punches vs. boxing punches

Many have and will argue that this straight thrust is less powerful than a boxer’s punches. This is partly true. But to understand why this is only partly true we’ll have to examine punching me... Read More

Telegraphing vs. staged activation
Posted On 10/14/2008 04:04:07 by dandjurdjevic

I think there is an important difference between sequential body movement (which is necessary) and "telegraphing" (which is undesirable).

The activation of a staged sequence of body parts is an essential component of a punch/strike/kick. Without it you would not be able to impart any real force. Consider the basic uraken (backfist): if you moved your wrist first, then your elbow, then your shoulder your strike would simply not work. Instead your strike must originate with movement in y... Chambering punches
Posted On 08/05/2008 01:55:32 by dandjurdjevic
Someone on an online forum recently wrote words to the effect of “Do you literally fight with you hands in a chamber position?”.

To me the real question is: "Do you mean to say you DON'T fight using a chamber?" If you don't, you'd be one of a very few!

What do I mean by this? Everyone - boxers included - use chambers. Chambers are nothing more than loading for a punch, in particular a punch that you wish to execute with power (ie. not a jab).

Now this next point is c... Read More
