Perceptions

"One of the most important aspects of achievement is training the eyes to see properly. Sight is an interesting phenomenon. We see things not as they are, but as we are. Our perception is shaped by past experiences, according to faith (what we believe) and consciousness."(by Dennis Kimbro)

In other words, seeing is not believing. Believing is seeing. We can only see in others what lies within ourselves. "You Must Become The Change You Wish To See" LOVE and CARE are simply four letter relationship words and without action they have no meaning.

Perception is the interpretation, based upon prior experience, which our mind makes on the images that enter the eye, the smells that enter the nose, the tastes that enter the nose and mouth, the sounds that enter the ears and the touches that enter the receptors in the skin.  Perception may or may not be accurate depending upon whether or not a person can use the novelty of new experience in place of apriori cogitatio (Descartes) as a way of giving meaning to something.  Maya, the Indian Hindi word for illusion is what is to be avoided.  By seeing through Maya, one strives for right seeing, part of Buddha's path to enlightenment.

Similarly, in Japanese, Hogen is the highest form of sight in which one experiences in the here and now (Wittgenstein) the exact true nature of the other, in the environment, with the interaction of the self, without the presence of expectations, wishes, hopes, or fears incumbant in cognitive processes or even purely emotional feelings.

Perception is deceiving! Our perception is mainly basing on the
vision of the naked eyes. What appears in the vision may not always be
the actual occurrence or factual truth. For instance, we may be blocked
by the blind sight such as when we look at an object from whatever
angle, we can never see what is behind the object. Our naked eyes are
limited by the positioning of the objects, and our perception is limited by passed experience.

What
we need to address as a martial artist at high level is, the use of the
spiritual eye which is a visualization using the mind. Lao Tzu had
talked about knowing everything in the world without going out the
door. It might be somewhat exaggerating, but we can actually see behind
the object with more thinking and more mindful visualization.....!
