Why drop tailbone in Qigong or Taiji?
Posted On 12/21/2006 19:53:53 by wingchuntaiji

Through dropping the tail bone when doing Taiji or standing meditation, the lower back relaxes. Especially when the head is pointed vertically to the sky or ceiling, the gravity will naturally pull the vetebrate straight and relax the muscles around the whole backbone all the way to the neck. The shoulders will then follow to relax. When the tensions are gone, more Qi flow and better blood circulation can reach the brain, and the brain will function at its peak. Doses of endorphin will then be secreted to comfort the whole body, and getting rid of stress and pain. Isn't that wonderful?

Ahhhh.....it all just works better when you're properly aligned, plus you are better rooted.  And then centering attention to the DanTien to help with the overall flow of chi can commence once you're in proper postion too!  ^_^

I teach Tai Chi meditation, breathing, and forms to women in treatment for opiate addiction.  They say its helped them more than anything else.  Many people become addicted to pain killers not just from physical but through psychological pain.  Tai Chi addresses both.  It gives them real tools to turn their mind/body from a place of anxiety and pain into relaxation, health, and enjoyment.  Its been a real treat to see their progress and receive their feedback.

It is all about how the Qi-energy reach the brain to first establish a sense of relaxation, tranquility, calmness, harmony, then it will lead to enlightenment-the brain secretes large doses of endorphin to bring a climax to the body and mind. Dropping tail bone can relax the lower back, and the gravity can pull the spine and further relax the upper portion of the vetebrate. More blood flow and energy can reach the brain.Tongue out

Yes. Even though I still do not seem to comprehend the wuji posture in its fullness yet, I believe my structure and taiji itself have been improving gradually. I believe comprehending and being able to stand in this basic stance is the key to having a glimpse into true taijiquan. Unfortunately, it is my observation that teaching and learning of this stance in depth is often neglected...

Dear Shuilongette,

A lot of times, it is the psychological effect that one worries about the pain and/or keep trying to make adjustment in the subconscious mind. The pain actually has been long gone, and there is no need to make any adjustment for the bad ankle anymore. If your doctor did a good job in fixing your ankle, and you no longer feel pain. Note:stapling the ankle and left metal staples in the foot is not good healing. Since you already learned Taiji before, you just need to get use to the stiffness on one ankle by shifting the balance left and right in smaller horse stance by opening your right leg to the right and shift balance to the right, and by opeining your left leg to the left and shift balance to the left in small steps.

You also can do the front and back balance shifting by opening a smaller bow and arrow stance and put balance on the front foot and rock back to put balance on the rear leg and perform Fend-off, Roll-back, Press, and Push.

In smaller horse stance, try to do a standing meditation such as the Cosmic Stance or the Hold The Ball and drop you tailbone without using anymore footwork. When you feel comfortable with your tailbone and your feet, you can jump back to what you did before in Taiji. You 'll realize that it was merely a Gun Shy!

it's something i'm having to learn all over again...after breaking my ankle in may 2005 and spending 6 weeks hopping around with a walker, and scooting up and down stairs on my butt, then having to learn to walk all over again. this year i'll be learning taiji posture all over again (i really notice when my tailbone isn't dropped in iaido class...my back screams at me and i can't find the connection to my bokken!)

needless to say, my shoulders will be happy for the relaxation when i can get that posture ingrained again....

No one will do substance abuse if we all know how to achieve enlightenment and can induce doses of endorphin at our command. The drug cartels will be out of business!Tongue out

I actually plan to launch a non-profit project "Qigong For A Drug-Free World". You are welcome to join the team when the time comes!
